What Your Marketing Team Needs to Know to be Successful

Whether you’re working with an internal marketing team or an outsourced marketing agency, one thing stays the same: an informed marketing team is a successful marketing team. While some of the things on this list might seem a little bit out-of-the-box, all this information helps your marketers make informed recommendations and decisions to support your overall business goals. Many of these questions are topics we discuss during our discovery calls with new clients, while others we touch on during monthly meetings and annual reviews with our clients.

Questions Your Marketing Team Needs to Know:

  1. What makes your business different?  

  2. Why do customers choose you over your competitors? What makes you special?  

  3. What are your core products/services? What do you want to sell/do more of? Less of?  

  4. Who are your competitors (both locally and nationally)? What do you like/dislike about how they do business?  

  5. Do you have any partnerships with other businesses?  

  6. What is your primary call to action? Do you want to increase engagement, website traffic, sales, etc.? 

  7. What does your sales cycle look like? From first touch to purchase, what does the timeline look like? Who is in contact with these potential customers? How are they communicating? Are proposals involved? Are meetings involved or is it a simple “add to cart” type purchase?  

  8. After your customer purchases or signs an agreement, what happens next? What kind of communications does the customer receive? 

  9. What percentage of your customers are repeat customers? What about referrals from current customers?  

  10. What is an average sale worth to you? Does it vary from service to service? If you’re a product-based business, what does an average customer spend? Does it vary based on in-store or online? What about their demographics? What factors impact how much your customers spend with you?  

  11. What marketing have you done in the past that has worked well? What has not worked well?  

  12. What marketing have you wanted to try but have not had the strategy/resources to make it happen?  

  13. Who on your team communicates with your customers? What resources do they have at their fingertips? What resources do they wish they had?  

  14. What is your total revenue for the year? What is your profit margin?

  15. What is your marketing budget? Are you happy with that budget or do you feel like it needs adjusting? Do you want to keep marketing spend the consistent each month or do you want to flex in the ebbs and flows of your sales cycles?  

  16. What’s your monthly goal for your business? Your one-year goal? Your five-year goal?
